Oct 2023 - ALL WELCOME!
Anglesea community Network along with…see below!
Dear Anglesea Streetscapers,
You may be aware that a key-and-common outcome of the Shire’s ‘Neighbourhood Character Workshops’ in Anglesea, Aireys ad Lorne was the high value that all three communities place on their treescapes and native vegetation and their wish to see Surf Cost Shire Planning support that wish. The communities’ shared desire to see fewer trees removed is further validated by the advice of our experienced local firies who tell us that trees ain’t the risk: its ground and ladder fuel that propels fires. This last is graphically illustrated by aerial photographs of post-fire Marysville where all the trees are standing but houses and gardens between them are burnt. Our value of treescape is contradicted by the tree-removal blessing that the state government’s 10-30/50 policy provided and which Shire Planning (as a state government agency governed by state government regulation) is required to implement.
Since those workshops discussions community reps from Anglesea, Aireys and Lorne with the Shire have looked to find some middle ground to allow Shire Planning to address this contradiction between regulation and the wishes of their communities. It has been the agenda for a series of meetings with the Shire’s ‘Planning Scheme Review’ (PSR) team and its inclusion in the draft PSR report to Council evidences that it is recognised as deserving of attention. While we acknowledge that Shire Planning is in a tough spot with this, we have confidence that our Planners understand our wish to see less clearing and are hopeful that they will find a way to deliver for us as best they can. The other thread this discussion has been to share the very latest science of the interface and interaction between an advancing bush fire and our own urban properties with our community which evidences how individual action really can make a difference. The action from this is a matter of providing highly credible useful information and through multi-channel education.
To that end, ACN is facilitating a high-info/high-quality, Anglesea-specific community briefing on bush fire risk mitigation through action by property owners on their own blocks. This will be held at 9:30 on 5 November at the Anglesea CFA.
The session will be delivered by Peter Ashton of Forest Fire Management Victoria who will be supported by Jamie MacKenzie. I have seen Peter Ashton’s presentation which includes aerial photos the progress of the 1983 fire from Deans Marsh through Anglesea and of the Marysville fires and can assure you it is incredibly illuminating!
Please join us on the 5th and do share this invitation to your friends and neighbours.

Barwon Water Borefield Project Team communication below:
Barwon Water plans to start a groundwater pumping test at its Anglesea borefield in late January 2022, to inform a review of our bulk entitlement and associated Monitoring and Assessment Program. The test will run for six months.
Conducting the pumping test will help ensure a robust review and confirm how much water we can continue to take sustainably. Our priority is to protect the environment while providing high quality, affordable drinking water.
We are hosting online community drop in sessions to provide an update to the community and answer any questions.
Please feel free to share with your networks.

Governance of the GOR Region
Convener: Janet Harvey
The Great Ocean Road and Environs Protection Bill 2019 has been introduced into the Victorian Parliament to give effect to the reforms outlined in the Government’s Great Ocean Road Action Plan. It will form a new principal Act that:
recognises the state significance of the Great Ocean Road and its landscapes;
establishes a new parks management authority, the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority that is dedicated to protect and manage the coast and parks along the Great Ocean Road;
provides for the development and implementation of an overarching planning framework for the region; and
requires dedicated environmental reporting for this special part of our state.

ABOUT THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD NETWORK
The Great Ocean Road Community Network (GORCN) is a growing network of community groups from the towns along the Great Ocean Road between Torquay and Port Campbell. The Network’s aim is to be a strong advocate for the shared interests of the all communities along the road whilst protecting and respecting their unique characters. It recognises that there are issues of concern to particular individual towns but looks to maintain its focus on the strategic issues that impact the collective GOR community.
The sixteen community groups in GORCN share common ground in their commitment to:
coastal and bush protection and regeneration
thriving, diverse local communities
management of tourist numbers
direct community involvement with relevant decision-making
recognition of climate change, the need to act to address its impacts
protection of the character of each town
nature-based and regenerative tourism
quantification, analysis and communication of tourism’s invisible costs
evidence-based research to establish the carrying capacity of the Great Ocean Road and the management of it
an agreed set of indicators to monitor Great Ocean Road conditions
infrastructure provision that is consistent with the above
GORCN’s goal is to work collaboratively and transparently with the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority (GORCAPA) to look after the Great Ocean Road’s environment, communities, economy and hinterland. A key element of that goal is to facilitate GORCAPA engaging the professional skills, experience and network connections of our GOR communities.
If you would like to know more about or to participate in the Great Ocean Road Community Network, please contact us via info@angleseacommunitynetwork.org.au and we will connect you with Anglesea’s GORCN delegates, Janet Harvey, Peter Doyle, David Birrell and Michael Collins.
